Who conduct UGC-NET

National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by UGC and UGC-CSIR
In early eighties, there was a general perception among the public and the leading educationists that well qualified persons were not being attracted towards teaching profession. Concerns were also expressed about the criteria that were employed for the selection of teachers. It was increasingly realized that quite a large number of people who neither had the competence nor the aptitude for teaching made an easy entry into this profession. The Committee formed by UGC in 1983 on revision of pay scales of teachers in the universities and colleges under the Chairmanship of Prof. R C Mehrotra recommended the following for the post of Lecturer:
i) Qualifying at the National test conducted for the purpose by UGC or any other agency approved by UGC. ii) Master’s degree with at least 55 % marks or its equivalent grade.
UGC conducts NET twice a year, i.e., in the months of June and December. The notifications announcing the June and December examinations are published in the months of March and September respectively in the weekly journal of nation-wide circulation, viz, Employment News.
The CBSE, which conducts several entrance examinations for engineering and medical undergraduate programmes besides the school leaving exams, was chosen for the purpose. A senior official said that given the CBSE's proven record in conducting competitive examinations on a large scale, the UGC decided it would delegate the task of conducting and administering the NET to it.
However, the CBSE has no experience of administering a post graduate level examination. To this end, the UGC has decided to share its resources with the CBSE.
On the basis of the Supreme Court's direction, the UGC had constituted a four member committee headed by H Devaraj, Vice-Chairman, UGC to assess whether these 41 institutions could continue to operate. All the institutions have made their presentations, but the committee was unable to arrive at a consensus. Sources said that there were differences of opinion on the approach that the committee should take in assessing these 41 institution.
